1News in New Zealand is reporting that Power Rangers is leaving the country after 20 years. Power Rangers productions first moved to New Zealand as part of a cost saving measure in 2002-2003 at the start of the Disney era, with the first NZ filmed series being Power Rangers Ninja Storm. The 20 years in NZ encompasses the Disney era, the Neo Saban era, and the Hasbro era of the show. International hit series Power Rangers is leaving New Zealand after being produced on our shores for more than 20 years.
The news has shocked members of the film industry, who’ve called it a huge loss for the cast and crew who’ve been a part of the show.
The production company, Hasbro, confirmed the news to 1News in a statement but didn’t say why it was discontinuing filming here.
“We are committed to keeping Power Rangers fresh by reimagining the brand and how we bring our entertainment content to life for our consumers”, a spokesperson said.
After 10 years of production in the United States and Japan, the show was brought to New Zealand in 2002 — so it could be made for cheaper.
Since then, it’s brought in more than $340 million to the local economy, as well as providing a pathway for local actors and crew into the industry.
Actress Sally Martin worked on the first season of the show in New Zealand — Power Rangers Ninja Storm.
“I was the only female ranger in my series and one of two Kiwis. I’d worked for a few years within the industry, but nothing could prepare me for that kind of schedule and style of shooting”.
Ria Vandervis and Teuila Blakely have also worked on the show throughout the years, with Blakely starring in the upcoming season as Commander Shaw in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury.
“Between the crew and the cast, it’s just this amazing feeling and bond, and I’m gutted to see it leave our shores production-wise”, Blakely said.
Some members of the industry believe it could be connected to New Zealand’s film tax rebate, which currently sits at 20%, with an extra 5% if the production meets certain criteria.
President of the Screen Production and Development Association Irene Gardiner said it’s important New Zealand is competitive on the world stage.
“That’s one of the nervous things for our producers who work on international productions, is maybe we’re not quite competitive as we might be in the world at 20-25%”, she said.
The 30th and final season shot in New Zealand is set to be released later this year.
“We’ve been in communication with teams to ensure they are set up for success in their next adventures”, a Hasbro spokesperson said.
“We’ve had the pleasure of working with such incredible and talented teams in New Zealand and plan to keep close for any future projects that may be a fit for Power Rangers or across any other of our future entertainment productions”.

Also announced, but not available for pre-order until April 19, were the rest of the MMPR Remastered Figures. In addition to the extra paint apps and updated helmets, Kimberly gets a new head sculpt that looks much more accurate than the before, Tommy comes with The Green Candle, and they all come with “morphin hands” so that they can do the morph pose, despite already being morphed. Plus, the Dragon Shield, included with the Red Ranger this time, and armbands are removable, and the shield has 2 size options, so that it will also fit securely on the female figures.

Continuing their line of Power Rangers inspired statues, Way Studios has announced their Dragonzord statue. No price has been announced, nor when the statue can be pre-ordered, but they did announce that the statue would be limited to just 199 pieces, will be huge, and will contain plenty of LEDs. And based on their other statues, you can bet it will cost a pretty penny. The Dragonzord joins the MMPR Dino Megazord statue, Lord Zedd statue (sitting on his throne), Green Ranger 1/4 scale statue, and White Ranger bust in their licensed line of Power Rangers collectibles, with only the Megazord and Green Ranger having been released so far.

Today’s 1027 Hasbro Pulse Premium Fanstream event had a few BIG Power Rangers related reveals.
Possibly the biggest new was the original reveal of the cast for the MMPR 30th Anniversary special!
As revealed during Hasbro PulseCon, we already knew that Walter Jones would be returning as Zack, and David Yost would be returning as Billy, but we also have confirmation that Catherine Sutherland is returning as Kat, Steve Cardenas is returning as Rocky, Karen Ashley is returning as Aisha, Johnny Yong Bosch is returning as Adam, and introducing Charlie Kersh (love the first name) as Min, Trini’s daughter! Also returning is Alpha, although we don’t know which one, or who will be voicing him.
Interestingly, both Adam and Aisha are wearing similar outfits, and Adam’s has a badge visible. At first glance, it looks like an SPD badge, but JYB has tweeted that it actually says SPA. Could this be a precursor to SPD (Space Patrol Alpha perhaps), or do they work at a spa? We shall see.
But before any of that was revealed, Kai Moya was brought on to reveal the Blue Cosmic Fury Ranger costume:
As you can see if is pretty similar to the Green Ranger costume, but includes Ollie’s new Tricera-blaster weapon. He also mentioned that they would continue to battle Sporix monsters in the new show, which I’m pretty sure was also a new revelation.
But, since this is Hasbro, the first thing they did was announce the pre-orders for 2 new Lightning Collection figures: Silver Space Ranger with his Silver Cycle, and Blue Centurion!
